Map Of The Soul: Persona – BTS

BIGHIT ENTERTAINMENT / 2019

★★★(6/10)

Since debuting as No. 1 on Billboard 200 in the U.S., BTS has become the first band to release three No. 1 albums in less than a year since The Beatles. It also topped the British Albums chart, making BTS the first album to reach the top in Korea.

“Map of the Soul: Persona” is influenced by various places. The album itself is based on “Jung’s Map of the Soul,” about a theory Carl Jung has created for psychology. The EP also features references to Greek mythology, including a track called “Dionysus”, the Greek god of grapes and wine, and their concept photos depicting several members holding grapes. It has been described as a strong hip-hop track with strong beats, significant rock impact and vocal effects.

The septets co-create and produce large amounts of power, which some media see as a success factor. Their music often features references to literature, painting, and psychological concepts.

The EP is similar to the previous album, so the theme is good but lacks originality. BTS, of course, writes lyrics about various kinds of love, but it’s already included in all of its previous albums, and other countries, including Korea, are also writing a lot about love. So all music webzines have about the same rating. To raise the rating, BTS needs to add a futuristic and progressive sound.

BTS is still growing due to its fandom and global influence. This is that one can succeed according to the amount one tries. In the future, BTS can release albums like The Beatles’ “Rubber Soul” and no one knows what will happen.

Persona is missing the dramatic punch of BTS’s previous work.
