Titanic Rising – Weyes Blood

2019 – Sub Pop

★★★★☆(9/10)

Titanic Rising is the fourth studio album from CA based Pop singer Natalie Mering under the name Weyes Blood. This album brings out everything that Natalie has to offer. She really wears her influences on her sleeve but instead of being an exact copy she takes the sounds and submerges them underwater.

A flawless pop album, her voice is a spoken remark of every nostalgias. As descriptors said lush and ethereal.

It does get a bit dreary in the centre, but overall this is a lush, rich, beautifully crafted pop. I certainly got strong wafts of Carole king and Laura nyro at times, and understandably so just with a modern twist to the arrangements. The closing ballad ‘picture me better’ is like something from an old Hollywood film, and I mean pre-50s here….its lovely.

Weyes Blood loves the movies. She’s very upfront about this fact – on the track Movies, she sings “I know the meaning / I know the story / I know the glory / I love movies…” And her latest album, Titanic Rising, takes its name from the long-maligned sequel to Titanic, in and of itself a winking bit of movie lore. Even without the context of Movies and the title of the piece as a whole, it’s clear her love is genuine – because Titanic Rising (the album) is an album thoroughly fascinated with the movies.

The third full length LP from Weyes Blood is a staggering piece of work that takes you on a roller-coaster of emotions and waves of nostalgia.
